Defeated NDC MPs now have more time to spare Parliament - Avoka

The Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Cletus Avoka, has appealed to sitting MPs who lost the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries over the weekend in a bid to re-run on the ruling party’s ticket not to shun government business in the House.

He said the defeat is a blessing in disguise because in a way the losers will have more time to stay in the House to champion government business.

“Those who didn’t win primaries have more time to spare and stay in the House and floor for debate,” the majority leader said. “All will depend on discipline and focus we have as Ghanaians. ”

There are reports giving strong indications that the losing incumbents are unhappy with the turn of events and may adopt a lackluster attitude towards pushing through bills in Parliament that could aid government decisions.

Hon. Avoka said the situation poses a serious challenge to Parliamentary business, but called on losing MPs of both the NDC and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give off their best until their terms are over in January 7, 2013.

Some NDC big weights in Parliament notably the Sege MP Alfred Abayateye, Nii Tackie Commey of Odododiodoo and MP for Ada Alex Tettey-Enyo among others lost their bid to run on the party’s ticket come the election 2012.

“It’s a challenge to lose about 22 MPs in primaries,” Hon. Avoka told an Accra-based radio station Joy FM. “It’s a challenge to the work of Parliament. ”

“Collectively, we should sit and strategise and find ways and means of massaging the situation to ensure that MPs are back to work so we don’t stall government work.

“MPs should appreciate the responsibility bestowed on them. We do need collective discipline, commitment and goodwill to ensure government business is done. We have a mandate until Jan 7 2013 to work,” the Zebilla MP added.
